Perfect for families of pediatric hospice patients!!!
Any family dealing with the loss of a child needs this book. This is especially true if the child has special needs and/or is in a pediatric hospice program. This book would be an excellent choice for families who can and will have another child after the loss of one. Through touching language and adorable illustrations, the book conveys beautiful messages about God's purpose for the presence of these children in our lives. Adults will be overcome with emotion when reading this book, and children of all ages will be able to understand it's message. All readers will remember that we love one another even when we are apart, and that we will all be together again. Having recently lost my two year old daughter after many long months in hospice, I found this book touched my heart like no other.

What a wonderful story
This book was recommended by my sister who had read it to her children. Our close friends had lost a special 8 year old girl and a couple of years later had a new baby boy. We wanted to give him something that would also include his sister and this book was it. My children are older, 21,19,and 17 and all read it and felt good after. It is a very special book.

A story that touched my heart
This book is a wonderful, warm touching story about an angel, children, and life. I recieved the book as a gift after loosing my daughter. What an inspirational story that deals with loss in a touching and uplifting way. I think the book doesn't have any age boundaries. What a special person Elissa must be. signed, a grieving mother.

Baby Dear (Little Golden Readers)

A gift for my children
My eldest daughter picked up a copy of Baby Dear at a garage sale. It was missing its cover and the pages were worn and even torn. She had to have it. Thank goodness. This book helped ease my three oldest daughters into becoming big sisters. Now I want to give each of my girls a copy to share with my grandchildren. Please Golden Book put this book back into print. We all need to share this beautiful story.

I have always loved "Baby Dear"
Growing up, I loved reading stories with my mother. My very favorite by far was (and still is) Eloise Wilkin's "Baby Dear." The story of a young girl and her doll is delightful for children of all ages. This book meant so much to me that I would take it to bed with me at night and sleep with it as if it were a beloved animal. My current copy is so worn that it had to be taped. I now have a one month-old niece with whom I would like to share this beautiful story. Although it is taking some time, I hope to find a copy of "Baby Dear" so that she can love it as much as I did.

This book touches me deeply...
I absolutely LOVED this book as a child!! I had older siblings that I would ask to read it to me until I had it memorized! I then taught myself to read by comparing the words to those in my memory and moved on to read other books - at the age of 4! When I was 5 years old my little brother was born. I remember a time when my mother was changing my little brother and I brought my doll in and layed her next to him to do the same. I then quoted a comment from the book: "Mommy changes her baby, and I change mine!" It was so wonderful for me to copy my mother's love for her own baby ("Mommy's baby is my baby brother. Maybe someday I'll let my brother play with Baby Dear."). I found a brand new copy in a store a few years back and have it saved. I didn't realize that it was out of print! It would be great if I still had my old copy - I bet it was worn! I wanted to get a copy for my 1 year old niece who is already showing favoritism with her other books. It would be nice if she were to use memorization as a tool to help her learn to read as well. Keep in mind... no matter how frustrating it is that your child wants to hear the same book read over and over, or watch the same movie... their little minds are hard at work!! I'm 26 years old and looking at this book still gets to me! The illustrations are ADORABLE and the story is so en"dear"ing!!

My Rescued Golden: True Stories of Rescued Golden Retrievers and the People Who Love Them

A most Magnificant Book!!
My Golden Frosty's story in in Margo's book. I read it first when I bought it, I was so proud. Then I started reading each of the other wonderful stories and was feeling every emotion, from tears to happiness and whatever lies in between. Each and every story brought such emotion to me. There are so many out there who love Goldens so much they devote their lives to them. I am very proud to be included in this wonderful book and to have been owned by such a wonderful dog.

For The Love of Goldens
I felt so honored when asked to provide my Golden story for this book, and when it arrived I let it sit for a few days. I was worried that some of the stories would be sad and open old wounds for me. One day I sat down and read it cover to cover and am a better person for doing so. Author Margo gently nudged each and every one of her authors to speak from their hearts in their own voices and each tale is utterly unique and beautiful. This book pays a fitting homage to the most loving and companionable breed of all time, the Golden Retriever. It is a wonderful testimony to what adopting a rescued Golden can do to enrich the lives of the adopter and adoptee.

Wonderful Book!
Marjories McHann's stories of rescued Goldens and their people are a must read for every dog lover. These stories and photos are a wonderful telling of what Golden Retriever Rescue does to help dogs and what these rescued dogs have done for the people who love them. Even the toughest reader may need a tissue or two - the stories are full of joy and a bit of sadness too...

Wide eyed attention
This book had my second grader's undivided attention from start to finish. I loved it so much I am buying it for my nieces and nephews! This is definitly an author I'd like my children to read more of. He is not only a wonderful illustrator, but a great story teller also. I grew up going to Granpa's farm every summer. Unfortunately, that opportunity for most kids is just not there anymore. Tractor Mac brings it alive again for me and gives my children a little glimpse of what life was and is like on a farm. The relationship Steers shows between a farmer and his tractor is one I remember well. Please give us more!

An excellent book for the whole family!
Tractor Mac is a wonderful story. The characters are warm and extremely likeable. The beautiful illustrations seem to jump off the pages, coming to life in our living room. My three year old daughter loved it from the first reading and continues to request it. Her five year old brother is really moved by the various emotions in the story. Even our eight month old loves the bright colors on each page. To him, it looks good enough to eat! Tractor Mac is our favorite new gift for friends and relatives. We are anxiously waiting for a sequel!

Wonderful books for little girls, too!
My grandaughter has just visited a farm with her pre-school class when I gave her a copy of Tractor Mac. She was thrilled with this charming book and wants to read it every day, even after several weeks. Billy Steers' wonderful illustrations and story seem to make the experience she had at the farm come alive for her again. I think it will continue to be a favorite book and will appeal as she gets older and understands more of those great explanations of the tractor and horse "parts and trappings." We look forward to more books from this talented illustrator and writer.

The Hound and the Falcon: The Isle of Glass, The Golden Horn, and The Hounds of God

You will not regret reading this story
If you do not read this book you have missed a wonderful story that will be with you for life. This is a true fantasy story, but based in real life history. You get to meet Richard Lionheart, you get be there on the conquest of Constantinople. But more importantly, you get to travel inside the mind of Alfred, the tortured elven-monk, immortal, magical, powerful. But he has been raised to beleive that the Fair Folk are creatures of the devil, and have no soul.
You get to laugh and cry with Thea, his oposite, sure in her power, loving her abilities. Loving him.
You get to travel alongside Jehan, young novice, clumsy scholar, powerful warrior-priest.
You get to follow the hard path of the elven King of Rhianna, who knows that only he can protect his country, but also that he is the cause of its peril.
You get to love Nikki, the boy whose path crosses Alfeds by coinsidence, and whose whole world changes.
This story will remain with you forever. Its magical world is our own, and that is part of the magic. The Fair Folk are essentialy us, they are humans, and that is what makes this a story that will break your heart.

Magic and History
The monk Alfred has lived his entire life hidden away in the st.Ruans abbey. But even though the years go by brother Alf still looks no older than a boy. Wise though he may be, Alf is unable to face the truth about himself. He is one of the fair folk, an elf, kin to the elven-king. But when trouble comes to st. Ruans, elf-blood can be hidden no more. . .

The great thing about these books is the easy flow of the story. You open them, and before you know it youre battling alongside King Arthur, running through the burning streets of Constantinople or fleeing the Hounds of God. And all the time there are the marvelous details, the dialog, the people. These characters are so easy to fall in love with. Alfred is so scared, so confused you just wish you could reach out a hand and tell him everything will be alright. Beacuse you feel so close to these people, al the way through the books.

These are definately worth the read.

Moving story of self acceptance & a grand adventure in one!
I first read this collection of three of Judith Tarr's best books back in the late 1980's. They are a little melodramatic at times, but I really enjoyed them.

The main characters are all incredibly well drawn, especially Alfred, the pious monk turned into a reluctant elven warrior & mage. He wrestles with his own self doubt and the state of his soul throughout the books, even as he changes lives for the better all around him. Sometimes, like his female foil, Thea, you just want to shake him and wake him up to the fact that someone soulless would never do so much good in the world--no matter what the church believes!

Alfred is a foundling who is raised by monks, and becomes a very learned and pious monk himself. His writings are praised by the Pope himself. Alfred eventually realizes that he is not aging and is, in fact, an immortal elf. If he believes his church teachings, then he is a soulless being. He grapples with this throughout the book. He has an encounter with others of his kind, nursing a prince of his kind back to health and meeting a fiery tempered elf woman, Thea. He is mortified that he is attracted to her--he had thought the vow of chastity to be the easiest of his vows, because he was never drawn to mortal women. He turns down the position as abbot, believing himself to be unworthy. (Those who raised him and grew up with him accept and love him as he is without a qualm--they know in their hearts that he is a power for good.) He then sets off to figure his life out. He is swept into the train of Richard the Lion-hearted later into the Crusades and to Rome. He is nearly burned by the church, becomes a great warrior, discovers his magical abilities, and finally learns to accept himself and the love of the elf woman who has been following him since their first encounter back at the abbey.

Don't miss this chance to read this book in this bargain omnibus form. You won't regret it!

Mousekin's Golden House is a Must Read
Mousekin's Golden House is perhaps the best Halloween book for children. It has a wonderful ending that children are continually surprised by. Although I like the entire Mousekin series, this one is the best. It can prepare school children for several different fall themes. I am amazed it is still out of print and hopeful that more people will ask for it so I won't have to borrow it all the time!

classic
As a librarian at Bradley Elementary in Corralitos, California, I read Mousekin's Golden House every fall. Staff and children love this book, and often ask me where they can purchase it. When I wanted to replace our library's tattered copy I was disappointed to find it out of print. Here is a beautifully illustrated and beautifully told story that never should go out of print. I am also a member of the National Storytelling Association and know it is rare to find stories that one can read to an audience of all ages, but Mousekin's Golden House is one. The whole mousekin series is wonderful

This is an excellent book for children and adults alike.
This is an extremely beautiful and warm book. I have lost the copy I owned and have been looking for it for sometime. I now have a grandson and this is a book I would especially like him to have in his library along with all the other Mousekin books. This book is appropriate for young children and fascinating for adults as well. I recommend this book for anyone looking for a quality children's book that is beautifully illustrated and well written. I hope that the publishers hurry and get more of these books on the shelves.

The New Baby (Golden Look-Look Books)

A great book for the Big Brother/Sister
This is such a cute book...I found it when looking for some book to get for my son to help him get ready for the arrival of his little sister...what I really liked was how it explained how the baby wouldn't be able to really do anything right away...that was very helpful because of course my son who is 2 thought that his sister would be able to play with him and everything right away...but after reading his books he realized she was going to be a little baby and wouldn't be able to do everything he wanted...he is now very excited for his sister to get here and he loves reading it...he now likes to read it to us...definatly a perfect book for either the Big Brother or the Bid Sister.

I think I can recite this book in my sleep....
"~I've read it that many times to my kids! Even after hundreds of readings, I still enjoy looking at the wonderful illustrations and reading the humorous text to my kids. (That, to me, is the mark of a good book: one that the parents don't mind reading over and over again!) baby's first year that's aimed at very young children and that tells new brothers and sisters exactly what to expect from the new baby) and Before You Were Born (a lovely picture book about pregnancy). Armed with these three wonderful books, your child will be ready for the joys and challenges of becoming a big brother or sister.

Such a great book for preparing child for new baby!
My son is 16 months old and he loves this book! It has been so helpful in trying to prepare him for becoming a big brother. Even though he is young, we are able to tell him about what babies can and cannot do so he will be ready when his brother arrives. I think out of all the books we bought, we will be able to reinforce more about babies with this book than any of the others. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs to prepare a child for a new siblings arrival!

Golden Days: Memories of a Golden Retriever
Published in Hardcover by Willow Creek Press (September, 2002)
Author: Arthur Vanderbilt
Average review score:

A beautiful, touching book
This is a beautiful, honest book about a family's love for their Golden Retriever. While the humans in the story are skillfully drawn, the central character is Amy--a loving and loved Golden Retriever. I cried at the end of the book. The lesson of the book is that a much loved dog can have a dramatic impact on a family's life--even if she isn't a search and rescue or therapy dog.

Universal Appeal
I agree with all the glowing reviews Golden Days: Memories of a Golden Retriever has been receiving, but I see something else in this book that no one else has mentioned yet--an added dimension that, I believe, gives this book its universal appeal. I think the author has written something much more than a book about a wonderful dog named Amy. Behind that captivating story is a meditation on the inevitability of the passage of time, almost an inquiry into the meaning of time and memory. Look at it: all the action takes place in a tiny geographic area, maybe a square mile at most. Very subtly moving across this canvas are the people whose lives touched this square mile--from prehistoric man to Indians and Pilgrims to pirates and finshermen and World War I aviators. Way behind the scenes there's a reference to great-grandparents, and grandparents and parents. A day in the past, the author seems to be saying, was their time, today is ours, tomorrow others will walk these same beaches, and that will be their day. I think it may well be this very quiet undercurrent that gives this slim book its punch and unforgettable power. I'd be interested to hear if any other readers have felt this too.

Your only philosopher is your dog - Plato
You don't have to own a golden retriever to read and really enjoy this beautiful book. As a dog lover that I am, I read anything which has to do with dogs regardless of breed. This book is similar to "the dogs of our lives", a book which touches your heart and brings tears & laughter as you read it. Thank you Mr. Vanderbilt for sharing your memories with us.
